Directors

Directors (Source IMDb)

The Genre we have decided to is crime. There are so many directors that have done crime movies but one specific director I have decided to look at is Francis Ford Coppola. He was born in 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, however, he grew up in New York in an Italian-American family. Coppola then graduated with a degree in drama from 'Hofstra University' .

He was training as an assistant with film maker 'Roger Corman' Working in areas of sound, producing and eventually directing. His first feature film was 'Dementia 13' in 1963.  Coppola  was also involved in a variety of script collaborations and screenplays like 'Patton' (1970), the film which he won a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award. In 1966, Coppola's second film brought him acknowledgement and a Master of Fine Arts degree. Coppola and George Lucas established American Zoetrope, an independent film company based in San Francisco in 1969. The company's first project was in 1971 and was named 'THX 1138'. It was produced by Coppola and directed by Lucas. Coppola also produced the film 'American Graffiti' in 1973 and it was directed by Lucas. The movie was awarded five Academy Award nominations, including one for best picture.

Coppola's film 'The Godfather (1972) became one of thee highest-grossing movies in history and it also brought him an Oscar for writing the screenplay with Mario Puzo. The film was also a Best picture Academy award-winner. Coppola also got nominated for the Oscar award for the Best Director.  Coppola also wrote 'The Great Gatsby' (1974) and 'The conversation' (1794). 'The conversation was honoured with the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival and it also brought Coppola a Best Picture  and Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominations.'The Godfather: Part II' (1974) was also a success like 'The Godfather' (1972). Film Opening Analysis - Home Alone & Rush Hour

Film Opening Analysis

Home Alone

This movie a comedy genre, which we can see this by the opening scene. The cast, sound effects and the opening scene were funny, which this created the comedy scene.
The opening scene shows a kid pretend to be an old man and ordering pizza, by scaring the pizza guy, which the scene was funny, which is acted by the kid. In addition, this scene does not have any narrative parts.
Also, in this opening scene, by the atmosphere and the setting, which is snowy around, and is decorated by the Christmas decorations, this shows that this movie shows is related to Christmas and released during Christmas time.

Rush Hour 3

This is another comedy genre movie, which we can notice and see it clearly in the opening scene.
The traffic officer, which is 0ne of the cast’s actions are funny, which the officer is dancing in the middle of the road, which is a funny action, which this creates or says that’s a comedy movie.
The atmosphere and the setting is a road, which is a busy road, which makes the dancing situation of the officer even funnier.

Theory: Story and Narrative

Story and Narrative

Todorov

Todorov’s narrative theory basically states that most story’s or plot lines follow the same pattern or path. There are 5 steps in this pattern:

Equilibrium
The first part of the story will display a happy start, where the majority of characters are content and everything is as it should be. So in the Simpsons movie, in the first part, everything is normal and Homer is just doing chores.

A Disruption
The second part of the story will feature a problem or something will disrupt the happiness. In the Simpsons, it begins when Homer saves a pig.

Realisation
This part of the plot is when everyone realises the problem and it is chaos. So, the Simpsons are kicked out of Springfield and forced to move to Alaska.

Restored Order
This part of the plot is when the characters attempt to repair the damage and restore the problem. So, the Simpsons go back and save Springfield.

Equilibrium Again
This is the final part of the plot where the pattern is reduced and normality can resume again. So, the done is blown up and everyone is free.

Barthes

The text is like a tangled ball of threads.
The thread needs to unravelled.
Once unravelled, we encounter an absolute wide range of potential meanings.
We can start by looking at a narrative in one way, from one viewpoint, one set of previous experience, and create one meaning for that text.
You can continue by unravelling the narrative from a different angle and create an entirely different meaning.

Propp

Propp suggested that every narrative has eight different character types, these character types are:
The villain- fights the hero in some way
The dispatcher- character who makes the villain’s evil known and sends the hero off.
The helper- helps the hero in the quest.
The princess or prize- the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because the villain and resulting in a happily ever after’ moment.
Her father- gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, and marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Prop noticed that functionally, the princess and the father cannot be clearly distinguished.
The donor- prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
The hero or victim- reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
False hero- takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

Levi Strauss

Basically Levi Strauss theory is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of a narrative structure.

Genre typecasting - Iconography and Conventions

Genre typecasting

The genre which we have chosen is the crime genre, which generally old actors mostly act in a crime genre movie.
This is because, crime genre is mainly a serious typed movie, which is mostly suitable for old people, like from 24 and onwards, this is because serious movies won’t suit young kids most of the time.
This will helps us to choose our cast carefully, to make the script interesting to watch it.

Iconography & Conventions

By thinking about the crime genre, the images which I am imagining is mainly serious scenes, such as kidnaping, dark images, mysterious sceneries and many other mysterious effects.

Representation – gender

Representation

Are there any conventional representations within your genre?
The conventional representations within my genre are that the women are presented as the damsels in distress and the men are the dominant figures.
Give specific examples of how these representations are suggested to the audience in the opening.
An example of this is when Chelsea (the victim, also a female) gets kidnapped (by a male, the kidnapper) was placed in a position where no one could help.
Does this link to the target audience? Typical narrative? Setting?
This links to the target audience because there is a young girl that grew out of her teenage years and is being kidnapped by a slightly older man due to her parent's actions. I think this is a conventional narrative because women are often portrayed as the victims and not the attackers. The setting is conventional because it is outside in the night. This would be the ideal time of day to kidnap your victim because you are less likely to be identified and seen.

Plan for script

Plan
Pitch:
An important person who is either rich or high in status gets kidnapped. This person is a woman because it is conventional. She is still alive at the moment. The killer has left clues to which victims that are targeted next in his/her “list”. It is up to the police to hunt him/her down and stop him/her in his/her tracks! This is an action packed thriller/ crime drama.

Characters:

Criminal: Man. White European (maybe Russian). (Tall. maybe 6ft) Strong. Well educated.

Links between victims:
He was once rich. He saw how horribly his acquaintances treated the lower class. They believed that they were untouchable and invincible and that they could get away with any crime just because they had an unlimited stock of money to be used as a bribe (in other words hush money). He detested  this action and the sight of their endeavours.

Story and Narrative

Iconography and conventions.

What images come to mind when thinking about your genre?

When thinking about our genre, The images that come to mind are lots of action and mysteries. For example, there could be a police car chase after the criminal and the criminal's face could be concealed until the mystery has been solved.

Genre typecasting

Genre Typecasting
Which actors usually appear in your genre?
The actors that normally appear in the crime drama genre are
Mark Harmon, Tom cruise, Daniel Craig etc.

Why do you think they are chosen?
I think they are chosen for these roles because of their personality
and they are famously known for these genres. Because of this it
might be difficult for them to get jobs outside of these genres
because their fans are used to them playing a particular part.
Another reason why they might only do this type of role is because
they can only act in that way.

How will this aid your casting choices?
This will aid my casting choices by helping me to decide who should be who based on their character. For example, if a person seems very friendly, soft and nice, I wouldn't cast them as the villain.

Shot by shot remake analysis

Shot By Shot Remake Analysis

Explain/analyse what you learnt from the process.
In this process of the shot by shot remake,  I learnt that if you want to get the job done, you have to do it yourself or it will not get done. It might not be up to the best standards but at least you can say that you have tried and that you have worked hard even if it is the last minute.

What went well in the group?
Nothing. My group wasn't there when it was the deadline for filming the shot by shot remake. I filmed  the shot by shot remake with the equipment and the setting that I had to work with.I had to complete it by myself. To make up for this, one of the members of the group offered to edit the video that was shot. I  was happy with this because my editing skills are not that great. The person too the video and was never seen again by the group or the school.

What skills have you gained?
The skills that I gained by doing the shot by shot remake are to be humble and to be patient.

What skills do you need to acquire?
ed I need to acquire my editing, my time management and my independent skills. This is because if I don’t acquire these,my work will not get done.

What do you need to work on before filming your own opening? How will you do this?
I need to work on my editing skills and my plans for my own film opening.

I will do this by practising editing videos and complete the work that was set.

Script - draft

Police MYSTERIES.

Ext: OUTSIDE-ON A STRAIGHT ROAD-NIGHT
Establishing shot is used to reveal the front of a black car driving at a fairly constant speed at around the speed limit of 40-50 kph. The camera zooms into the car's front screen and a mid-shot is used to show a mysterious white driver in a tuxedo. However, the driver's face is not seen. Only from his torso to his mouth is shown.(To emphasise the mystery).

CHELSEA
No thank you. The cab is almost here. I wouldn't want to waste their time. I couldn't possibly...
Michael rolls his eyes and interrupts her.

MICHAEL

CHELSEA
Ummm. I don't think so.

MICHAEL

CHELSEA

CHELSEA
Okay.It couldn't hurt to get a free ride once in a while from my parents' colleague.

MICHAEL
Chelsea, just  get in the car.

CHELSEA
Okay. Okay. (Thinks to herself) I bet you are only looking for a raise by helping your boss' daughter

MICHAEL
Colinas de Dinero right?

CHELSEA
Right.

INT-Michael's car-night

Chelsea gets into the back of Michael's car, there is an opaque glass divider between the front seats and the back seats. Michael slowly develops a smirk on his face without Chelsea's knowledge.
He closes the car doors with the child lock and Chelsea begins to feel suspiciously scared. He turns around and smiles at Chelsea with a reassuring smile.

michael
Safety first.
Chelsea politely smiles. Michael starts the car and starts to make light conversation to kill the awkward tension/silence.

MICHAEL
Seat belt please.

CHELSEA
Okay.(She puts on her seatbelt)

MICHAEL
Your parents talk about you a lot.

CHELSEA
Really? Okay.

MICHAEL
Would you like to listen to music?

CHELSEA
Sure. what kind have you got?

MICHAEL
Classical, soul, Spanish music, pop and the list goes on.

CHELSEA
I think I will choose classical.

MICHAEL
Okay.Strange choice for a young girl like you.

CHELSEA
Well I have a unique choice of taste in music.

MICHAEL
(He thinks to himself) yeah and it is called old woman syndrome.
Chelsea listens to the music while Michael drives with occupied thoughts.

CHELSEA
It's just about five more houses down.

MICHAEL
Thank you, I know.(he pauses for about 5 seconds)
Chelsea, do you trust me?

CHELSEA
Pardon me?

MICHAEL
Do you trust me?
CHELSEA
Um yes, I guess.

MICHAEL
Well that is good enough for me.
Michael speeds up the car and drives past Chelsea's home.

CHELSEA
Wait,wait! where are you going?
Michael presses a button which automatically winds up the opaque divider between the front and back seats.

CHELSEA
Michael, you passed my house, where are you taking me?
Chelsea bangs on the glass while screaming.

CHELSEA
LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT! WHERE ARE YOU TAKING ME?
Michael speaks through the speaker.
MICHAEL
Chelsea I'm sorry to have to do this to you but if you and your parents cooperate correctly, you'll be free without any harm done to you or your friends.
CHELSEA
What do you mean.

MICHAEL
You didn't think that your friends were too busy for you, did you? Why did you think that they couldn't pick you up?
CHELSEA

Oh my Gosh! I can't believe that you kidnapped my friends as well you incompetent nincompoop! Please let me go.(She starts to cry) what did I ever do to you?
MICHAEL
Oh it's not you, it's your parents...
